Antares is a documentary film collective based in Helsinki and Rovaniemi. It is a self-organized, closed peer support group of six women and non-binary filmmakers.

We started Antares in 2020 out of a common need to develop our documentary and filmmaking practices in a collective and multidisciplinary environment. Our aspiration is to create a more open and vibrant field of documentary filmmaking in Finland.

We all share a filmmaking background. We have also studied and practiced media arts, sociology, contemporary history, dramaturgy, curating and art history. In Antares, we are able to share our different areas of expertise with one another to develop our thinking and our artistic practices. We think that documentary subjects need to be approached from different viewpoints, both artistic and societal.

Besides developing collective dramaturgical practices, we discuss the ethics and values of our work together. The collective is a space for reflection, brainstorming, and peer support. Along with project-oriented meetings we nurture our core values: care, mutual support and encouragement.
