Rapland (work in progress)

Lapin Akka from Rapland đź“·Toni Kauppila

A documentary musical about rap music and hip hop culture in Finnish Lapland. In the film we follow four Northern rappers who share their stories and their music with us. The story of the genre’s evolution from the early 90s to the present day is told through experience of identity in Lapland and the impact rap music had on individuals. The film offers global audiences a window into marginalized cultures that thrive in the periphery of Lapland. It reveals not only the empowering, unapologetic attitude of the genre but also gives an insight into what Lapland’s version of hip hop bling-bling is all about. Why did a culture that originated in African American neighbourhoods resonate so strongly in Lapland?

Rapland is written and directed by Miina Alajärvi and produced by Oona Saari from Illume Ltd.
